Artist's Comments

This is the 3rd painting I worked on this quarter for my beginning painting class, and the one we spent the most time on. The assignment for this one was to create a picture out of contemporary objects and work from that photo reference (see the work of Guiseppe Arcimboldo). I got the reference for this painting while I was on vacation with my family in Maui. There was this awesome Easter brunch buffet in Hana and I decided to turn my plate into a face. Took the snapshot, and 10 weeks later, here it is. I hope it's not too unappetizing...

Our professor was Raul Guerrero (http://www.raulguerrero.com/). The technique he taught us was the same used by Vermeer: create a monochrome underpainting and then glaze over with color and highlights. It was a pretty awesome class and I think the paintings we did were better than the ones at the senior art show ;P
